Remember 11.11.1869

11 November 2009 will be the 140th anniversary of the enactment of the Victorian Aboriginal Protection Act; an act that allowed government to

• Prescribe where Indigenous Victorians were allowed to live

• Negotiate if and on what terms Indigenous Victorians were employed

• Appropriate wages earned by Indigenous groups or individuals and

• Take custody of all Indigenous children

Translation? Stolen Land. Stolen Wages. Stolen Generations.

The Victorian Aboriginal Protection Act was the first of its kind anywhere in Australia and set the precedent for Stolen Generations legislation throughout the country.

ANTaR Victoria is asking Victorians to remember the harm inflicted upon Indigenous people under the auspices of this ‘Protection’ Act, and to show regret for its consequences by wearing a black wristband in the second week of November. By doing so, Victorians will also be supporting reconciliation and Indigenous rights advocacy through ANTaR Victoria.
